The attic is the part of the structure above the living space ceiling and the roof. Not every house has an attic and not every house is required to have an attic depending upon the design. There can be a structure design with high vaulted ceilings or a low sloped roof and if it is less than 30 inches of height and very small (less than 30 ft.²), an attic access is not required. The attic in that type of construction primarily will only have a heater duct passing through it between rooms and there would be no usable space or possibly no way to get through the attic without damaging the heater ducting, etc.
